Quilts 1700-1945

The Queensland Art Gallery’s 2013 winter exhibition, ‘Quilts: 1700–1945’ explores over 200 years of British quiltmaking.

Quilts are evocative symbols of our collective past — stimulating our earliest memories of security and comfort and awakening the senses through touch and smell. They resonate with historical references, revealing the social and cultural significance of what has often been simply perceived as ‘women’s work’.

‘Quilts 1700–1945’ explores the personal and social histories embedded in both highly decorative and homemade bed covers that reveal the maker's complex engagement with the wider world.

Every quilt has a hidden history, an unspoken story concealed within its layers. The exhibition features works from London’s prestigious Victoria & Albert Museum collection and loans from selected UK museums, as well as one of the world’s most important textiles, The Rajah quilt 1841, from the National Gallery of Australia.

My Gen 50+, the Gallery’s public program for visitors aged over 50, provides events for people wanting to gain knowledge through cultural and leisure activities. During ‘Quilts 1700 – 1945’ there will be a number of engaging My Gen 50+ programs and events including after-hours tours, conservation insights, and short courses focusing on social and cultural histories of quilt making and the exciting fields of contemporary craft and design.
