Broome, Western Australia, where the earth meets the sea

When is the best time of year to fly to Broome?

The best time to visit Broome is during the dry season, running from April/May through to September/October, when you’ll experience warm days, balmy nights, and clear blue skies. The dry season is considered peak season, and the town can get packed, especially mid-June to mid-August, so we recommend that you book your airfare and accommodation in advance to avoid disappointment.

During the wet season, which runs approximately from October/November through to March, the days are hot, and you’ll experience thunderstorms. Between January and March, you will experience monsoonal activity, possible cyclones, lots of rain and possible flooding.

One thing to be aware of when in Broome, or to define, on Broome Beaches, are the stingers that are found in the waters of the Broome coast during the wet season from approximately November through to May.

A stunning sunset at famous Cable Beach, Broome, Western Australia

What are Broome’s top attractions?

Broome offers the ultimate adventure destination, from expansive beaches, a chance to visit the famous pearl farms, and the breathtaking Horizontal Falls

Cable Beach

Joining red ochre cliffs with white sand and turquoise water, this striking, 22-kilometre beach is where Broome’s most exclusive resorts reside. And while it’s perfectly suited to afternoons of sunbathing and beachcombing, there’s still plenty of adventure to be had at Cable Beach.

Head out on a self-guided 4WD tour and find a patch of paradise to call your own, or join one of the evening camel rides along the shoreline. When daylight begins to fade, the nearby beach clubs and restaurants provide an ideal setting to see out the day, with uninterrupted views of the sun setting over the Indian Ocean.

Willie Creek Pearls

An essential stop for travellers who want to take a little piece of Western Australia home, this operational oyster farm produces rare Australian South Sea pearls, creating pendants, bracelets and earrings in the process. More than just a jewellery store, Willie Creek Pearls also offers behind-the-scenes tours, giving visitors an inside look into Broome’s pearl industry from shell to harvest to showroom.

Sun Picture Gardens

The oldest outdoor cinema in the world, Broome’s Sun Picture Gardens is a living relic of days gone by. And while it’s shifted its focus from silent films to new releases, this nostalgic Broome cinema maintains much of its charm thanks to a quaint on-site kiosk and traditional movie snacks to match. Take your pick of popcorn, soft drinks and ice cream, then settle in for a twin screening beneath the stars.

Horizontal Falls

Named “one of the greatest natural wonders of the world” by David Attenborough, Broome’s Horizontal Falls have to be seen to be believed. Formed by a gap in the McLarty Ranges, this fascinating tidal phenomenon gives the appearance of a waterfall cascading across the ocean’s surface. Only observable by air or by sea, the Horizontal Falls have become one of the Kimberley’s most coveted attractions, with tours and excursions departing from Broome daily.
