Things to do in Port Vila

Shopping in Vanuatu is plentiful and affordable. Downtown Port Vila bustles with a number of clothing and knick-knack stores. Duty free shops sell well-known perfume and jewellery brands next to cheap and cheerful clothing and souvenir shops that hawk hyper-colour sarongs and t-shirts. Beware, many stores sell fake labels and knock off designs. The Port Vila Markets present the opportunity to buy local arts, crafts, clothing and artefacts, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables. A number of major supermarkets stock both local and international food, while road-side market stalls sell local produce, eggs, shells and World War Two memorabilia.

As a major South Pacific tourism hub and cruise port, Port Vila boasts Vanuatu’s most impressive dining scene, offering a notable selection of eateries. Resorts and restaurants serve a variety of cuisines, including: Japanese, Chinese, Italian, French, Melanesian, Polynesian, Ni Vanuatu and western fare; while delicatessens, bars, cafes, bakeries and patisseries dot the waterfront and city centre. Vanuatu’s French influence radiates throughout Port Vila’s dining scene. A large established ex-patriot community living on Efate also sees a number of a western-style cafes and restaurants strewn over the island. While Port Vila Market offers an array of cheap and fresh seasonal fruit, vegetables, herbs and seafood – including traditional Vanuatuan foods like lap lap, tulak and nems.
