What is Wireless In-flight Entertainment?

Wireless In-flight Entertainment is a new state-of-the-art entertainment system that allows you to wirelessly stream content to your own portable device onboard. There is a server on the aircraft that holds the content and it is distributed to your device through wireless access points located throughout the aircraft.

If you’re using an iPad®, iPhone® or iPod touch® you will need to ensure you have downloaded the application on your device prior to boarding. You can get the Virgin Australia Wireless In-flight Entertainment App through the App StoreSM.

If you are using a Windows laptop, then you simply need to have the software Silverlight loaded on your device. You can ensure you have the correct version of Silverlight using the Wireless In-Flight Entertainment System Check.

Is Wireless In-flight Entertainment available on all aircraft?

The Wireless In-flight Entertainment System will be available on one of our domestic Boeing 737-800 aircraft for the initial trial. Following this, we will progressively introduce the technology on all of our Boeing 737 and Embraer aircraft.

How do I get the Apple iOS App?

The Wireless In-flight Entertainment Apple iOS App is available free through the App Store.

I have Silverlight installed but I cannot connect to the Wireless In-flight Entertainment System - why?

You need to ensure you have version 4.2 of Silverlight or later installed on your device to be able to connect to the Wireless In-flight Entertainment System. You can check you have the correct version of Silverlight using the Wireless In-Flight Entertainment System Check.

Can I use the Wireless In-flight Entertainment System if I have not downloaded a Virgin Australia Wireless In-flight Entertainment App or Silverlight?

No. The Wireless In-flight Entertainment System requires the correct Apple iOS App or Silverlight to be downloaded onto your device prior to boarding.

What content will be available?

You will be able to access over 300 hours of movies, TV shows and music. There is also a survey, so you can tell us about your experience.

Can I control when the content starts and stops?

You can control the viewing of the content. Just keep in mind the length of your flight so that you don’t miss the end of your program!

Can I continue to watch the Wireless In-flight Entertainment programs after my flight?

You can only access the Wireless In-flight Entertainment System while on board.

Can I connect to the Internet or use social media sites?

No, you cannot connect to social media sides or the Internet.

When can I connect to the Wireless In-flight Entertainment System?

You can use the Wireless In-flight Entertainment System from when the fasten seatbelt sign is turned off after take-off until it is illuminated again for landing.

Is streaming through Wi-Fi safe in flight?

Streaming through Wi-Fi is completely safe for use on board aircraft with the correctly installed Wireless In-flight Entertainment System.

Why can I now have my phone/device turned on?

We have equipped the aircraft with the required system to ensure that the use of Wi-Fi transmitting devices is completely safe for in-flight use.

Can I use voice or SMS services on an aircraft equipped with Wireless In-flight Entertainment?

Mobile phone voice or SMS services are not available in-flight.

Do I need to select flight mode?

You will need to select Flight Mode prior to take-off when travelling on an aircraft equipped with the Wireless In-flight Entertainment System. After the seatbelt sign is turned off, you will need to enable Wi-Fi on your device to access the system.

Will you provide headsets?

We will have headsets available if you have forgotten your own. Virgin Australia recommend that you use your own headsets as they are probably best suited to your device.

What if I don’t have my own compatible device?

Virgin Australia provides Business Class guests with tablets on board for complimentary use. We do not have any units available to hire.
