Virgin Blue to Build New Maintenance Base in Sydney24/02/2011
Virgin Blue Group of Airlines today announced it will build its first new wide-body hangar and associated infrastructure at Sydney Airport as part of a new engineering maintenance base to support its growing operations.
Virgin Blue Group of Airlines Chief Executive Officer John Borghetti said planning was well underway and the current hangar design would accommodate up to four narrow-body aircraft, or two narrow-body aircraft and one wide-body aircraft.
“This new strategic asset will provide us with line and base maintenance capability for wide-body and narrow-body aircraft at our largest and busiest airport, supporting our expanding fleet operations,” Mr Borghetti said.
“Having a dedicated maintenance base here in Sydney, complementing those we already have in Brisbane and Melbourne, will create significant benefits to our business in terms of optimising scheduling and network operations and also generating potential revenue opportunities by offering use of the facility to partner airlines.”
Virgin Blue welcomes the support role provided by the NSW Government in establishing the new engineering maintenance facility in Sydney.
The development of the hangar is consistent with the Sydney Airport Master Plan and will be subject to the Australian Government’s usual airport planning approvals process, which includes a public consultation period.Construction is expected to be complete by late 2012.
The announcement of the new maintenance facility today follows Virgin Blue’s 2008 decision to establish a Cabin Crew and Flight Crew base for V Australia and Virgin Blue in Sydney. Virgin Blue and V Australia now have more than 900 Cabin Crew and 381 Flight Crew based in Sydney.
In the same year, Virgin Blue also opened a B777-300ER simulator at Silverwater in Sydney for training V Australia pilots.
Virgin Blue currently operates more than 95 flights through Sydney daily and 15 to 20 aircraft overnight in Sydney every night.
