NEW ERA OF AIRLINE COMPETITION FOR PORT HEDLAND COMMUNITY - $99 FARES

Tuesday 4 August 2009: Virgin Blue will operate its inaugural Perth to Port Hedland service today, with the airline’s modern red jet taking off from Perth at 4.10pm and touching down at Port Hedland for the first time ever at 6.15pm with a full load of passengers on board. The inaugural flight signals the first of Virgin Blue’s new daily services that will operate between Port Hedland and Perth, bringing with it a new era of affordable fares for the people and businesses of Port Hedland.

The inaugural flight and Guests will be welcomed on arrival by Town of Port Hedland Mayor, Cr Stan Martin. It was the efforts of the local council that secured Virgin Blue’s new services and Virgin Blue has applauded Mayor Martin and his team for their energy and enthusiasm in campaigning for Port Hedland to bringing competitive air services to the town. Virgin Blue will operate a daily service between the WA capital and Port Hedland using the modern executive style EMBRAER Jet aircraft which are tailored to suit the needs of non-metropolitan communities. The E-170 seats 78 Guests in 2 x 2 seating, while the slightly larger E-190 can offer a smooth flight to 104 Guests.

Virgin Blue Chief Executive, Brett Godfrey, said, “We have made no secret that regional WA is a big focus for us this year and we are pleased to be launching flights to Port Hedland today that will no doubt bring some great fares and great service to a region that will greatly benefit for having a second airline option.”

A special sale fare of $99* one way on the internet for flights between Port Hedland and Perth is on offer for 48 hours from 10am today until 10am Thursday 6th August for travel between 1 September-23 September and 13 October- 10 December 2009. Virgin Blue will offer connecting flights between Port Hedland and Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
