Mark Vaile Joins Virgin Blue Holdings Limited Board
Virgin Blue Holdings Limited today announced the appointment of Mr Mark Vaile as a non-executive independent director of the company, effective from 22 September 2008.
The Chairman of Virgin Blue, Mr Neil Chatfield said Mr Vaile would add a new dimension of experience to the Board of the airline group.
Mr Vaile joins the Virgin Blue Board after a distinguished career as a Federal Parliamentarian during which he served in positions including Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Transport and Regional Development and Minister for Trade.
He was also instrumental in securing or initiating a range of free trade agreements between Australia and the United States, Singapore, Thailand, China, Malaysia and the ASEAN countries.
“Mark’s appointment is both timely and appropriate for Virgin Blue as we embark upon significant expansion, including the addition of new regional routes and flights and long haul international operations through our international airline V Australia,” Mr Godfrey said. “We welcome the valuable perspective Mark will bring and look forward to welcoming him to the team,” he said.
Ministerial Portfolios held by Mr Vaile during his five terms in Federal Parliament include Minister for Transport and Regional Development; Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry; Minister for Trade; and Minister for Transport and Regional Services.
Mr Vaile also served as Deputy Prime Minister from July 2005 through to December 2007.
Multi award winning airline Virgin Blue and international carriers Pacific Blue and Polynesian Blue currently operate a fleet of 68 modern Boeing 737 and Embraer E-Jet aircraft flying to 24 Australian and eight international destinations including New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and the Cook Islands.
