Velocity Takes Out Prestigious ‘Freddie’ Award
2 May 2006: After just six months in the marketplace, Virgin Blue’s rewards program, Velocity, is already making its mark on the world stage, taking out an award for the “Best Award Redemption” in the Asia Pacific region.
The annual ‘Freddie Awards’ held in Los Angeles are widely recognised as the academy awards of the global frequent flyer industry. Frequent flyer programs from around the world compete in nine Freddie Award categories, and ‘Best Award Redemption’ (Japan, Pacific, Asia, Australia), won by Velocity, is awarded to the program that ‘has the best award availability, enabling members to get the awards they want when they want them’.
The Freddie awards have run for the past 18 years and airline programs are nominated and voted for by frequent flyer members from 164 countries and regions. Over 390,000 voters from the Americas, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Japan, Pacific, Asia, and Australia voted in this year’s Freddies.
The awards were inspired by the late Sir Freddie Laker, who in 1978 was knighted by Queen Elizabeth ll for his contribution to commercial aviation and the British economy.
Known for his pioneering marketing ideas within the travel industry, Laker founded Britain's first all-jet air carrier, Laker Airways Limited and also founded the “SKYTRAIN" service, which revolutionized the airline industry by offering no-reservation, low-cost air service.
Virgin Blue’s Velocity program was unveiled in November 2005 to offer a new world program to revolutionise the way members redeem their points by offering an any seat redemption policy for the first time in the Australian market.
Other key Velocity benefits include free on-line membership and no blackout periods, making it a popular program for travellers exasperated by having to redeem points when it suits the airline rather than the member.
Virgin Blue Chief Executive, Brett Godfrey, said, “This is a terrific accolade for Velocity, especially considering the program is still in its infancy. Being recognised by our own members and other program members reaffirms our strong belief that travellers want transparency and convenience when it comes to redeeming their points. With Velocity, if the seat is for sale, it’s also available for redemption whether it’s Christmas, footy finals or any other day of the year.”
Virgin Blue’s sister carrier and Velocity foundation partner, Virgin Atlantic, was also recognised, taking out a Freddie for the best elite level program in “flying club”.
Other Velocity foundation partners include Europcar, Emirates and National Australia Bank as the Financial Services Partner. The program is poised to announce further partners in coming weeks to enhance the program appeal even further.
