Virgin Blue Takes NBL Sky High13/10/2004
Virgin Blue and the National Basketball League (NBL) have today announced a three-year partnership, making the multi-award winning low fare carrier the Official Airline partner of the Philips Championship.
The partnership is the first by Virgin Blue with a major national sporting body with the new relationship flying in the face of traditional sponsorship.
Virgin Blue Chief Executive, Brett Godfrey, said, “Virgin Blue is tremendously excited to form this unique partnership with the Philips Championship. We have not previously entered into sponsorships with sporting bodies because we haven’t been able to find one which was a good fit for us. In the Philips Championship, we have found just such a fit. The league is vibrant and exciting and is a perfect match for our own brand.”
Both Virgin Blue and the NBL have been in close consultation to develop a mutually beneficial corporate travel deal, which also includes membership for each player to the airline’s new era ‘Blue Room’ airport lounges in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
“Not only will the players and coaches enjoy Virgin Blue’s state of the art facilities and award winning service they will also be able to stretch out in our special ‘Blue Zone’ seats that offer plenty of leg room to accommodate even the tallest of the Philips Championship players”, Brett Godfrey added.
NBL General Manager, Chuck Harmison, said, “We are delighted to join with a dynamic partner like Virgin Blue, who we believe is a perfect fit for our own brand image.
“This partnership will see our league enjoy significant player and marketing benefits in terms of cost savings and marketing support. This is a vital partnership that will provide an important assist to the Philips Championship and is yet another piece of terrific news for our league.”
To celebrate today’s announcement, members of the Brisbane Bullets team will also join Virgin Blue management and crew in the Blue Room at Brisbane Airport.
The Philips Championship tipped off its 27th season on 29 September and will climax with a best-of-five Grand Final series in March.
