Virgin Blue Launch Flight Lands At Whitsunday Coast12/04/2003
Low Fares and Direct Sydney-Whitsunday Coast Service Prove Huge Winner For Tourism
Virgin Blue will today touch down for the first time at Whitsunday Coast Airport (Proserpine), with the inaugural flight taking off from Sydney at 9.30am and arriving at 11.55am.
It marks the airline’s newest addition to its route network, following strong demand for a convenient direct service to one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations.
In true Virgin Blue style, the Sydney-Whitsunday Coast launch flight will involve celebratory in-flight activities including free champagne, face painting and a few other surprises for Guests on board.
An in-flight auction will also be held to raise money for one of Virgin Blue’s favourite charities, The Clown Doctors.
The initial response to the new service has been outstanding, with the launch flight fully booked and forward bookings also trending strongly.
Virgin Blue spokesperson Amanda Bolger said, “We anticipated an enthusiastic reaction to the new direct Whitsunday Coast service but are simply amazed at how quickly it happened.
Clearly, the Whitsunday region is a favourite destination for tourists wanting to soak up the sunshine and stunning scenery and affordable direct access, makes it even appealing.”
Virgin Blue will operate a weekly flight timed to boost key markets such as packaged holidays, as well as the 7-day bareboat charter market in the beautiful Whitsunday Islands.
The Virgin Blue schedule, which sees Guests departing Sydney at 9.30am and arriving at 11.55am on Saturday, is designed to get holiday-makers into the Whitsunday region in time for a sunset soiree.
The return flight departing Whitsunday Coast at 12.30pm and arrives in Sydney at 2.45pm, means travellers can enjoy one last sleep in or take down their sails before heading home.
For people who can’t spend the full 7 days, daily flights to and from nearby Mackay with convenient bus connections from the Whitsundays to Mackay Airport give people the option of flying home any day they like without having to pay through the nose.
Virgin Blue’s fantastic everyday fares between Sydney and the Whitsunday Coast start from $199 one-way on the net, with the Fully Flexible fare of $385 one-way on the net, 33% lower than the Qantas equivalent fare of $579.
Connections are also available between the Whitsunday Coast and Melbourne and Adelaide.
“From past experiences, the launch of a new Virgin Blue route means a great tourism boost and while it’s early days, judging from the response to our new Whitsunday Coast service, the region is set to become even more popular as a preferred paradise playground”, Amanda Bolger finished.
