Virgin Blue To Fly Sydney to Gold Coast

01/05/2001

First Five Days - Every Seat $55

Virgin Blue today announced direct services between Sydney and the Gold Coast from June 17.

Chief Executive, Brett Godfrey, made the announcement while visiting Coolangatta this morning with the first of Virgin Blue's brand new Next Generation 737-700 aircraft, direct from the Boeing production line in Seattle.

The route will further cement Virgin Blue's position as a Queensland based carrier, providing the people of Southeast Queensland and Northern New South Wales with a direct low fare service to Sydney as well as offering Sydney-siders a choice of carriers when it comes to escaping to the Gold Coast theme parks, Surfers Paradise or the relaxed atmosphere of Byron Bay.

Brett Godfrey said "We have had the Gold Coast on our radar screen for some time; it's the next step in our steady expansion strategy and we are happy to confirm plans to operate a Sydney-Coolangatta service".

"In the past 6 months, hundreds of thousands of Virgin Blue guests have travelled from Sydney, Melbourne, Townsville and Adelaide to Brisbane and then continued on to enjoy the Gold Coast experience. The direct Sydney-Coolangatta service represents the beginning of more choice and more convenience."

Virgin Blue will initially operate one return flight a day from Sydney to Coolangatta but will also look at increasing both the frequency and services from other cities into this under served market.

"While every available seat in the first five days will be just $55 online and for only $2 more if booked by phone, we will continue to have thousands of seats offered at this price in the coming months. South East Queensland, Northern New South Wales and Sydney are all premier leisure destinations and we are pleased to be launching this new route in time for people to make the most of the school holiday period," Brett Godfrey continued.

He concluded by saying "One of the key factors in deciding a new destination is whether the existing facilities and infrastructure can support the operational requirements of a low fare carrier. The Gold Coast Airport terminal will provide an efficient, comfortable and convenient facility for Virgin Blue guests".

Virgin Blue's new Sydney service out of the existing international terminal at the Gold Coast Airport, will compliment its nine daily frequencies between Brisbane and Sydney.
