Dining

The Coffs Coast has an abundance of restaurants, cafés and bistros that make the most of the region’s abundance of fresh local produce

The Jetty Strip in Coffs Harbour is one of the area’s most popular eat streets. The promenade features a wide variety of restaurants and cafés, covering everything from seafood to Chinese and Modern Australian to Thai.

For a room with a view it’s hard to go past Saltwater Cafe and Restaurant at Emerald Beach. An unforgettable dining experience, the restaurant celebrates a sweeping vista – from Coffs Harbour through to the Solitary Islands – with relaxed modern Australian dishes infused with Asian and the Middle Eastern influences.

The rejuvenated Surf Club Restaurant and Bar at Coffs Harbour Surf Lifesaving Club is one of the area’s biggest success stories. Open daily for breakfast and lunch, the Surf Club enjoys an absolute beachfront location and a menu brimming with fresh local produce.

The small town of Bellingen, in the Coffs Coast hinterland, has been long renowned for its locally farmed produce and off-the-land lifestyle. Following the town’s organic and relaxed ethos, Mouza Restaurant is one of the Bellingen’s most notable restaurants. Combining traditional recipes Mouza produces seasonal dishes with resounding passion.

A seemingly sleepy seaside village with a surprising multicultural population, Woolgoolga is the Coffs Coasts go-to for Indian cuisine. Impressive temples draw attention to the hills, highlighting area’s notable Punjabi and Sikh influence.

Bellinger River oysters, Orara Valley vine-ripened tomatoes, Dorrigo potatoes, Coffs Harbour bananas, fresh seafood from the Pacific Ocean, beef and dairy from the Tableland pastures, and local wines – Coffs Coast local fare is amongst the best in Australia.

Shopping

A tourist hotspot – a travellers’ halfway point between Sydney and Brisbane – the Coffs Coast prides itself on its thriving retail scene and services.

As the region’s leading business hub, Coffs Harbour has a wealth of shopping opportunities. Park Beach Plaza is the largest regional shopping centre between Newcastle and the Gold Coast, boasting close to 120 shops – including national chain retailers, exclusive boutiques and supermarkets. The Palms Shopping Centre, in Harbour Drive, the city’s main retail thoroughfare, also hosts a range of stores. While the Jetty area boasts promenade shopping overlooking Coffs Creek.

North of Coffs Harbour, amid the hinterland’s lush rainforest sits Bellingen, a charming town with a unique shopping scene. Bellingen’s main streets bound with an eclectic mix of designer names and outlets that appeal to the town’s arty nature. For a true taste of the town’s distinctive shopping scene, drop into the historic Hammond and Wheatley Emporium – a nineteenth century department store that houses jewellery and home wares from global brands and upmarket clothing ranges.

South of Coffs Harbour, just off the Pacific Highway, the river meets the sea at Nambucca Heads. A popular surfing town, Nambucca offers a rare opportunity to witness with two of Australia’s most notable surfboard shapers in action. Father-son team, Paul and Sage Joske have had a long and prominent influence on Australian surf culture. Shaping custom boards under the moniker of Valla Surfboards, their showroom, in the Nambucca Industrial Estate, displays all types of crafts, from mals to fishes and ancient wooden finless Hawaiian replicas. If a surfboard isn’t in the budget, a piece of Valla Surfboard merchandise will make for the perfect Coffs Coast memento.

As common in regional areas of all over Australia, the Coffs Coast hosts a series of weekly markets, with stalls selling locally-created produce, music, arts and crafts. The Coffs Harbour Jetty Markets is held every Sunday; with travelling markets held in Dorrigo on the first Saturday of the month, Woolgoolga on the second Saturday of the month, and Bellingen on the third Saturday of the month.
